Spiritual formation: “A Spiritaneous yet intentional detoxing and deconstructing of the ways we have been falsely formed…through sin, self-deceit, ethnocentrism, culture and church culture…,and a rebuilding and remixing of my inner being through deep and often corporate listening to God through prayer, Scripture, community, and quite often through “secular” sources, all towards the end that life of Jesus and the fruit of the Spirit are imparted to me so my gifts can flow as God intended; enabling me to simultanously live within the community of the Trinity and the real world streets of my city…”

Kevin Foster on Spiritual Coaching

At Starbucks on the day before class, I made this video with the amazing Kevin Foster, lead pastor of Lifebridge Community Church in Fresno, about:
  • 1)The importance of the "St. Arbuck's" anointing
  • 2)His take on spiritual formation/disciplines
  • 3)Spiritual coaching

  • >Sorry the sound sync is a bit off on this YouTube version. We'll show the original video (which tracks better) and discuss it this during

the Saturday afternoon session.(Yes, my comments at the end are a joke!)

    Thanks, Kevin!

Pre-class assignments

Class will be here before you know it!

NOTE: With LABI weekend intensive classes, the textbook is read ahead of time.

These links, also included under "helpful links" on the right hand sidebar, will be helpful in processing/summarizing the book:
BONUS: A journal/study guide to the book is available, and much of it is a free online read here.

The foreward and chapter one of the book are a free read online here

These three assignments, based on a reading of the book, will be due Fri. night:

1)A 1 page (minimum) summary/reflection paper on the "Simplicity" chapter
(Note: video of the author talking through this chapter is here on the website:click here.
You may also want to read the
Richard Foster interview on simplicity and posessions.)

2)Read the "Spiritual Formation Interview" with me (here, or linked at right under "helpful links)"and with Naomi Johnson (here, or linked at right under "helpful links)," then write out your own answers to the same four questions (conversational. personal answers). Actually, you may want to just find the questions, and answer for yourself before reading the others (as there is no need to compare your answers to others; up to you).

3)Closed-book test on Friday night will cover the "Fasting" chapter (particularly the info from that chapter excerpted here:"Foster on Fasting 1" and "Foster on Fasting 2" )

For those feeling they may want or need extra credit, write a 1-2 page paper where you comment and evaluate how Foster strings the 12 disciplines in the order he does. See especially his section called "Finis" at the end of Chapter 13. Then suggest a re-ordering of his order that works for you, and comment on why it makes sense to you and your spiritual style. Also please comment (and agree or disagree) on his placing of some disciplines under the heading of "inward," "outward," and "corporate." If it is helpful for you to rearrange which fall under which heading, discuss that.

Ready for Class?

Hi all! The syllabus will be up soon; but the main info you need to know is: order the textbook, as much of the class will be based around it. It is a classic by Richard Foster, "Celebration of Discipline," and it covers the "classic" disciplines of formation (Order info at right)..Here below is video of our textbook author summarizing the "Simplicity" chapter.

You may also want to read an interview with me that Len Hjalmarson did with me a few years ago about my personal spiritual disciplines/formation. It is here.
Be thinking how you would answer his questions.

Oh, regarding the photo of me: Yeah, I know I am standing in front of the "Y" (:

See you soon~!
